Apple advises against the use of hydrogen peroxide to clean Apple products

Cupertino tech giant advises users not to use hydrogen peroxide to clean Apple products like iPhone, iPad, Mac, iPod, and others. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic  “How to clean your Apple products” the support page is updated with the new instructions to disinfect devices.

As per WebMD, hydrogen peroxide is a mild antiseptic that is safe to use on the skin to prevent infection of minor cuts, burns, and scrapes. It can also be used to rinse the mouth to remove mucus or relieve minor mouth irritation because of cold sores, or gingivitis. This product works by releasing oxygen when it is applied to the affected area. The release of oxygen causes foaming, which helps to remove dead skin and clean the area.

Users can clean Apple devices with isopropyl alcohol wipe but not bleach or hydrogen peroxide

Apple devices are made of varying materials and all of them have specific cleaning requirements. But as standard tips applicable to all products, the company instructs users, not to bleach or hydrogen peroxide.

Is it OK to use a disinfectant on my Apple product?
Using a 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipe, 75 percent ethyl alcohol wipe, or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, you may gently wipe the hard, nonporous surfaces of your Apple product, such as the display, keyboard, or other exterior surfaces. Don’t use products containing bleach or hydrogen peroxide. Avoid getting moisture in any opening, and don’t submerge your Apple product in any cleaning agents. Don’t use on fabric or leather surfaces.

COVID-19 pathogen survives on surfaces for a few hours. Therefore, cleaning smartphones, keys, glasses, and other items is just as important as sanitizing one’s hands. But users need to ensure the use of the correct cleaning agents to sanitize their devices. Other cleaning tips include using a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive items, keeping away from liquid products, not using aerosol sprays, and more.
