King was a Baptist minister and a nonviolent activist in the Civil Rights Movement in the United States during the 1950s. He marched for rights to vote, desegregation, and labor rights for African American community in the country, and King’s civil disobedience with non-violent resistance proved to be pivotal for the movement.

In 1962, he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and sadly, was assassinated in 1968. Three years after the tragic incident, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday was observed and in 1986, President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law which is officially his birthday.

Apple recommends the “Stride Toward Freedom” by Martin Luther King Jr.

The homepage takeover includes a moving quote from King’s 1967 speech against the U.S. vs. Vietnam war which denounces war and asks people to stand up against the government’s decision to continue it.

This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for vigorous and positive action.

Apple has also shared a link to his book “Stride Toward Freedom” for interested readers to easily download for free from Apple Book.

A young Dr. King wrote Stride Toward Freedom just 2 years after the successful completion of the boycott. In his memoir about the event, he tells the stories that informed his radical political thinking before, during, and after the boycott—from first witnessing economic injustice as a teenager and watching his parents experience discrimination to his decision to begin working with the NAACP. Throughout, he demonstrates how activism and leadership can come from any experience at any age.

Comprehensive and intimate, Stride Toward Freedom emphasizes the collective nature of the movement and includes King’s experiences learning from other activists working on the boycott, including Mrs. Rosa Parks and Claudette Colvin. It traces the phenomenal journey of a community and shows how the 28-year-old Dr. King, with his conviction for equality and nonviolence, helped transform the nation and the world.
