Apple to Release Thinner and Lighter iPhone 5 this fall!

A day after we reported that Apple had ordered 15 million next generation iPhone 5’s, the Wall Street Journal is now confirming that Apple has ordered 25 million new iPhones for a fall release this year.

According to manufacturers of the new phone as well as the parts, Apple is planning on making the new phone lighter and thinner, although it’s not clear whether it will be a complete redesign of the iPhone 4. The iPhone 5 or 4S will sport the Qualcomm Gobi Chip, making it both CDMA as well as GSM compatible. It will also contain an 8MP Camera, which is a bump up from the current 5MP found in the iPhone 4.

Apple’s order from Foxconn is going to be a test of their abilities to produce. Foxconn’s CEO Terry Gou stated:

“The touch-screen devices are so thin. It’s really difficult to install so many components into the iPhones and iPads. We hope to raise the yield rate and volume in the second half which will help improve our gross margin.”

Needless to say, there are still doubts as to whether Foxconn will be able to meet this quota for Apple’s new iPhone and have it ready for release. Time will tell…
