Apple adds BIMI standard support in Mail app on iOS 16 and macOS Ventura to prevent mail spoofing

To prevent email spoofing, Apple has added support for Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI) stands in the Mail app on iOS 16 and macOS Ventura. The availability of BIMI will enable users to identify brand logos to authenticate the sender.

Spoofing or phishing is a fraudulent practice by malicious actors to present themselves from a reputable company or organization to gain access to their personal credentials like PINs, passwords, credit/debit card numbers, and other information. However, spoof emails with a fake sender address can not authenticate the original source of the email.

iOS 16 Mail app combats spoof emails with a new “Digitally Certified Email” message to verify the sender

Developer @Charlie Fish wrote on Twitter that in iOS 16, Apple has added the support for BIMI standard in the native Mail app which includes the brand’s logo along with the email’s header to authenticate the sender. The addition is implemented on macOS Ventura.

As per the shared screenshots from Chase bank, an email sent by a brand or company with a BIMI support will display its logo and a “Digitally Certified” label, and a “Learn More” link in the header. The  “Learn More” link will lead to the “Digitally Certified Email” message.

This email was verified as coming from the owner of the logo shown and the domain “alertsp.chase.com”.
