Bungie might bring ‘Destiny’ to iOS and Android in partnership with NetEase

Reportedly, the developer of the popular console title ‘Destiny’ Bungie has partnered with NetEase to bring a new first-person shooter (FPS) game to iOS and Android.

The Game Post spotted a NetEase Games artist’s LinkedIn profile which stated that the person helped develop “an unannounced FPS mobile game” and a source with knowledge of the studio’s plans confirmed that NetEase Games has been developing the mobile version of Destiny for over two years.

Bungie launched ‘Destiny’ in 2014 for PlayStation 3 and 4, and Xbox 360 and One consoles. The game is set in a “mythic science fiction” world where players take on roles to fight against the environment or other players. The developer released its sequel ‘Destiny 2’ in 2017.

Bungie to debut new FPS game “Destiny” on mobile, independent of Destiny 2 storyline

In partnership with NetEase, Bungie re-published the ‘Destiny’ franchise as an online-only multiplayer first-person shooter game in 2019. NetEase is one of the leading Chinese tech companies that worked with Blizzard on ‘Diable Immortal’ for mobile, iOS, and Android. Now the tech companies are working on the mobile version of the hit FPS game.

It looks like Bungie is now interested in building its own internal mobile game engine to “reach players on iOS and Android mobile platforms”.

NetEase Games is an expert when it comes to mobile games, with several huge mobile games under its belt. So, it’s safe to assume that sooner or later, Bungie will branch out the Destiny franchise to mobile devices.

Bungie‘s CEO, Pete Parsons revealed that NetEase has “a significant amount of experience in mobile we [Bungie] don’t have” and that this partnership will allow them to “incubate new ideas”.

According to the report, the upcoming title will be a first-person shooter like the Destiny series but its storyline will not be directly related to Destiny 2.

iOS and Android are lucrative mobile platforms, especially for gaming apps. Sensor Tower reported that consumer spending in mobile games hit $21 billion on Apple App Store and Google Play Store combined in Q1, 2022, in spite of experiencing a 7.1% Y-o-Y decline. Therefore, for developers to expand their console games to mobile seems like a logical step.

The top three highest grossing mobile games overall as well as on the App Store all came from Chinese publishers this quarter. Tencent’s Honor of Kings and PUBG Mobile—including its Chinese localization Game for Peace—came in No. 1 and No. 2 with $735.4 million and $643 million generated across both stores. MiHoYo’s Genshin Impact came in third with $551 million in player spending.
