Apple releases iOS 16.1.1 and iPadOS 16.1.1 with bugs fixes and security updates

Apple has released iOS 16.1.1 and iPadOS 16.1.1 to all users with bug fixes and security updates. These updates can be downloaded for your iPhone or iPad by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

Unlike iOS 16.1, or iOS 16.2 beta, these are minor updates, and the primary focus is on the two security fixes included in this release.

Apple’s release notes mention that these updates feature bug fixes, however, it is unclear what they are as the company has not shared any details. However, details of the security fixes have been shared and they are both related to libxml2. The security updates fix flaws that could allow remote users to execute arbitrary code or cause app termination.

Here are the details of the security fixes:

libxml2

Available for: iPhone 8 and later, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 5th generation and later, and iPad mini 5th generation and later

Impact: A remote user may be able to cause unexpected app termination or arbitrary code execution

Description: An integer overflow was addressed through improved input validation.

CVE-2022-40303: Maddie Stone of Google Project Zero

libxml2

Available for: iPhone 8 and later, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 5th generation and later, and iPad mini 5th generation and later

CVE-2022-40304: Ned Williamson and Nathan Wachholz of Google Project Zero

Although not mentioned in the release notes, it is also expected that this update fixes an iPhone bug that causes Wi-Fi to randomly disconnect.

Due to the nature of these security flaws, it is recommended that users update immediately. The updates can be installed by going to Settings > General > Software Update. Alternatively, you can also download the iOS 16.1.1 and iPadOS 16.1.1 ipsw firmware files to manually update your device or restore it.

Apple is currently beta testing iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2, which will ship with a number of new features and changes in December. Check out our coverage of the changes below:
