Apple has finally let the cat out of the bag on the launch time of the new iPhone12. The company’s CFO, Luca Maestri confirmed that the upcoming smartphone series will be delay by a few weeks at Apple’s Q3 2020 earnings call.
Like the unusual time we are living in due to COVID-19 pandemic, this official confirmation too is unusual for Apple rarely gives out statements on launch time of upcoming products. Maestri said:
“As you know, last year we started selling iPhones in late September. This year, we expect supply to be available a few weeks later.”
iPhone 12 Delayed
While discussing the company’s expectations in Q4 this year, Maestri quoted the September launch date of iPhone 11 in 2019 to mention that the new iPhone series will be “few” weeks later. When asked to elaborate on the launch time of the upcoming smartphone series during the Q&A session, Maestri said:
“I said in my remarks that a year ago we launched new iPhone in late September. And I said that this year, the supply of the new product will be a few weeks later than that.”
As the iPhone 11 and Pro models were launched on September 20, 2019, then it can be speculated that the new iPhone 12 series in mid-to-end of October later this year.
This official acknowledgment corroborates with reports of a slight delay in the release of the 2020 iPhone 12 series by Broadcom CEO, The Wall Street Journal, Ming Chi Kuo, analysts at JP Morgan. All the reports pinned the delay on disruptions in supply chain and production hurdles due to the imposed precautionary measures due to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic.
As per the report the global health crisis is responsible for delay in the production of mmWave 5G models and camera module in high end models of the new iPhone 12 series. Recent political conflict between India and China was also troublesome for the company because of the disruption of supplies to and from Apple’s assembly units in two countries.
This is an unprecedented confirmation of not only a new iPhone but of its delay or release time by an official in the company. Apple has always maintained secrecy till the end on its upcoming products. Having said that, it is appeasing to know for sure that when consumers should expect the new smartphone.
