macOS Sonoma Game Mode might come to iOS 17 and iPadOS 17

Apple recently released the fourth beta of iOS 17 to developers and beta testers and the latest beta update features evidence of Game Mode available on macOS Sonoma.

The upcoming macOS 14 update features a new Game Mode that increases the frame rate of any currently played games by optimizing CPU and GPU usage. In addition to prioritizing a game’s access to CPU and GPU resources, the feature also reduces audio latency for AirPods and input latency for Bluetooth controllers to significantly enhance performance and reduce lag to deliver a smoother and more responsive gaming experience on Apple Silicon Macs.

It appears that this capability might also be coming to iPhones and iPads running on iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, respectively.

Code of macOS 14’s Game Mode discovered in iOS 17 beta 4

While investigating the latest iOS 17 beta 4 update, 9to5Mac discovered code of macOS 14’s Game Mode which was not found in the previous iOS 17 beta updates. Its discovery suggests that Apple might be experimenting with expanding the feature to iOS and iPadOS to enhance gaming experience on mobile devices, iPhone and iPad.

As Apple Silicon delivers great graphics performance on Macs to run demanding games with great performance, the same M-series chips also power the latest iPads which means that they are also capable of offering a comparable gaming experience. Therefore, it makes sense for Apple to expand Game Mode to iPadOS 17.

Previously, the tech company released the first beta update of its new Game Porting Toolkit for macOS Sonoma with significant enhancements in game performance like a boost in framerates, improvement in game compatibility, and more. These updates showcase Apple’s focus on improving the gaming experience on its platforms.

Having said that, there is also a possibility that Apple might shelve the plan to integrate Game Mode across platforms because it does not release also the experimental features tested during beta testing.
