HomePod mini supports Thread networking

Apple has introduced a new “connect sound system” for users whole home with multiple HomePod mini speakers. Therefore, the low-power IP-based Thread networking technology enables connecting the Internet of Things (IoT) devices in a secure mesh-based system that allows users to create an ecosystem of devices. It supports multiple layers and contributes to building devices that are compatible with multiple ecosystems like Siri.

Thus, Thread enables seamless connectivity of HomePod mini across platforms and devices for features like Intercom, HomeKit, and others in a safe and secure environment.

“With multiple HomePod mini speakers placed around the house, you can have a connected sound system for your whole home. Ask Siri to play one song everywhere or, just as easily, a different song in each room.

And HomePod mini works with HomePod for multiroom audio and features like Intercom so you can easily communicate with your family members by voice using Intercom. Ask Siri to send your message to the whole house or to individual rooms — and everyone can easily respond.

If you want to take the amazing sound experience of HomePod mini even further, you can create a stereo pair. Two HomePod mini speakers paired in the same room create left and right channels for an immersive soundstage.”

However, currently, the Thread support is limited to HomeKit devices only and Apple might extend its support across platforms in the future. With Siri integration, HomePod mini ensures users’ smart homes stay private and secure.

  • The mini speaker only listens when invoked with “Hey Siri” voice command or tap and nothing is sent out of their homes.
  • Connected with HomeKit devices, all data is processed on the device and sent end-to-end encrypted to iCloud.

In addition to Thread, other wireless features of the small speaker are 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, Direct guest access, and Ultra-Wideband chip for device proximity.
